I will take you on a walk through Podil, or the Lower Town, located by the Dnipro River. In the 14th cent. through the 18th cent. Podil was Kiev’s government & administrative center. Well’ start at the 18th cent. ST. ANDREW'S CHURCH and its OBSERVATION DECK. After this, we will trek down ST.ANDREW'S DESCENT known for its steep terrain and architecture reminiscent of the Russian Empire. We'll admire the architecture of CONTRACT SQUARE which was Kyiv’s commercial hub for centuries (hence its name!). We'll see KYIV MOHYLA ACADEMY (17th cent.), which is the oldest university across Ukraine, Russia & Belarus and despite its old facade is still Ukraine’s top educational establishment. Podil suffered grievously during Soviets but against all odds retained many of its churches. We’ll visit PYROHOSHCHA CHURCH (12 cent.), FLORIVSKY CONVENT (16 cent.) and ST.NICHOLAS PRYTYSKA CHURCH (17 cent.). A final touch will be a visit to a local beer parlor to get a real taste of Ukrainian beer.
