You visit the formerly secret Gotthard fortress in the Gotthard massif. The journey takes you on a scenic journey by train to the Gotthard region, passing Andermatt to the Gotthard Pass. In the fortress you take the metro in the mountain to access all the different rooms. A separate guide provides information about the entire facility, the use of it, the importance of the Reduit strategy of Switzerland in World War I & II and why the facility was still in use long after the Cold War . You travel through a changing landscape from Lake Lucerne to the Gotthard Valley, to the alpine village of Andermatt and further into the high mountains of the Central Alps. • Sasso San Gottardo is situated in the alpine mountains over 2000 meters above sea-level. Even in summer cooler temperatures are no exception. Inside the fortress temperatures are around 6-7 degrees C (tunnels, historic part), the exhibition rooms are between 14 and 18 degrees C. We recommend warm clothing and solid shoes.
