History of Bulla Regia

The old town called Bulla emerged from long ago in the past, around the 5th century BC and was part of the Medjerda Valley during the empire of Carthage. There are many dolmens (Neolithic tombs) found on the hills in this area which belonged to this ancient period. During these times the town was mostly famous for growing wheat. During the roman time however, the name 'Regia" meaning "royal" was added as the town became a capital of one of the Numidian kingdoms allowed by the Romans after the fall of Carthage. Bulla Regia continued on growing wheat during the Roman rule, as well as carrying out large constructions. These allowed some prosperity for the town's inhabitants until the town reached its highest prosperity during the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD. It is during this prosperous period that some of the fascinating buildings were constructed in the town and reached today. The Byzantines occupation of the town came after and finally the Arabs who conquered the town in the 7th century.
