History of Chemtou

Chemtou was originally the Numidian settlement of Simithu. The roman acquired the region after the battle of Thapsus in 46 BC. The marble extracted form Chemtou sites soon became very important as it represented the Roman might as well as its unique golden color represented the Roman wealth and power over other lands. An important evidence is that Chemtou marble was used in the construction of a 6m-high column erected in Rom's forum to commemorate the death of Julius Caesar.

The quarrying operations were said to be both elaborate and sophisticated in the site and the Roman's fondness for marble gave further importance to the town. Chemtou quarries kept providing marble to the Roman empire as well as during the Byzan¬tine times also, until they were finally abandoned after the Arab conquest in the 7th-century. Today, the marble is quarried from the area east of the archaeo¬logical site only.
