History of El Jem

El Djem City is located in an archaeological site of great history that date back to the 3rd Century Ad. It was the place of the the Roman villa of Gordian, the prominent landowner who rebelled against the Roman Emperor Maximinus Thrax to be the Emporor of Rome but he failed and committed suicide in 238. Unfortunately, after the death of Gordian, the whole city with almost all of its structures were destroyed by the roman forces except for the colosseum that is regarded as one of the most preserved Roman Colossi in the world.
