Architecture of Eyup Sultan Mosque

Due to the earthquake of 1766, the mosque was damaged severely and Selim III (1789-1807) had commanded it to be demolished except for its minarets in order to reconstruct it again form the beginning. The construction works of the new mosque, which is the one existing today, took about 2 years from 1798 to 1800.

The mosque has an octagon plan with a central dome. The inner courtyard is rectangular and is covered in its three sides with gallery floors. The diameter of the dome measures 17.5m. The dome is supported by six columns and two arches. From the inner courtyard there is an entrance to the tomb of Eyup Sultan which is covered with tiles from inside and is considered among the most visited tombs in Istanbul. The sarcophagus in the tomb has a solid-silver gridiron with rich ornamentation surrounding it, which was ordered by Sultan Selim III.
