Halq EL Wadi City ''La Goulette'' is a region with a great history that date back to the Arab rule of Tunisia. In the 7th century AD, the region was used as a strategic outpost. During the Ottoman rule it was the center for the state-approved corsair fleets that preyed on Christian shipping in the Mediterranean. Ther are some constructions fromthat period in the city including Borj El Karrak that was used as a prison for slaves to be sold in Suk El Berka.
The Jewish community also constructed a walled town known currently as Little Sicily to be a place for their residence. This city was inhabited by the Italian troops during colonization
